Understanding Muslim Funeral Customs
In Islam, funerals are traditionally arranged as soon as possible after death. This means that decisions often need to be made quickly, with practical arrangements beginning without delay.
Muslim funerals usually involve the washing of the deceased, known as Ghusl, followed by the shrouding of the body, known as Kafan. These customs are often carried out by close family members or members of the Muslim community, usually by people of the same gender as the person who has died.
Funeral prayers, known as Salat al-Janazah, may take place at the mosque, prayer area or another suitable location before the deceased is taken for burial. Cremation is not permitted in Islam, and burial is the usual and expected practice.

Where required, we can also work with the mosque, cemetery and family representatives to help the funeral take place at the earliest suitable opportunity.
Working with the Mosque
Many Muslim funerals include prayers at the mosque or a suitable prayer space before burial. We can liaise with the mosque or family-appointed contact to help coordinate times, transport and the order of the day.
Our role is to support your family respectfully and ensure the practical arrangements are handled with care.
Preparation of the Deceased
Ghusl
Ghusl is the ritual washing of the deceased. This is usually carried out by close family members or members of the Muslim community, often by those of the same gender as the person who has died.
Kafan
After washing, the deceased is traditionally wrapped in a simple white shroud. This is known as Kafan and is an important part of the preparation before funeral prayers and burial.
Respectful Care
We will always treat your loved one with dignity and respect, and we will follow your family’s instructions wherever possible regarding religious and cultural requirements.
No Embalming Unless Required
Embalming is not normally carried out for Muslim funerals. Where there are legal or exceptional circumstances that affect the arrangements, our team will explain this clearly and sensitively.
Funeral Prayers and Burial
The funeral prayer, Salat al-Janazah, is an important part of the Muslim funeral. It may take place at the mosque, in a prayer area, or another suitable location depending on the arrangements made by the family and community.
Following the prayers, the deceased is taken to the cemetery for burial. We understand that family and community members may wish to be involved at the graveside, and we will help ensure the arrangements are carried out respectfully and in accordance with your wishes wherever possible.
Our team can help with transport, timings, liaison with the cemetery, and ensuring that everyone involved understands the order of the funeral day.
