Hindu Funerals
Respectful guidance and practical support for Hindu families, with care taken to honour traditional funeral customs, family wishes and religious observances.
Supporting Hindu Families with Care and Understanding
At Jennifer Ashe & Son Funeral Directors, we understand the importance of respecting faith, family customs and personal wishes when arranging a Hindu funeral. We are committed to supporting families with care, dignity and sensitivity, while helping to ensure the funeral arrangements reflect the traditions that are important to them.
We appreciate that every family may observe customs slightly differently, and we will always take the time to listen carefully and understand what matters most to you. Our role is to guide you through the practical arrangements while ensuring the funeral is carried out in a respectful and appropriate way.
Understanding Hindu Funeral Rites
In Hindu tradition, cremation is usually chosen because it is believed to help release the soul from the physical body. The funeral is often seen as an important final rite, sometimes referred to as Antyeshti, the final samskara.
The details of a Hindu funeral can vary depending on family tradition, community practice and personal wishes. Many funerals involve prayers, hymns, offerings and family participation, with the priest and close family members guiding the religious elements of the day.
Traditionally, the eldest son or a close male relative may take a leading role in certain rites, although family customs can vary. We will always listen carefully to your wishes and help support the arrangements in a way that feels right for your family.
Prayers and Rituals Before the Funeral
Before the funeral, families may wish to spend time with their loved one in prayer and reflection. A priest may lead prayers or hymns, and family members may wish to observe particular rituals around the deceased.
Some families may choose to place a lamp near the head of the deceased, offer prayers, place flowers or garlands, sprinkle water, or include other meaningful items in accordance with their tradition. In some customs, offerings such as rice balls, known as Pindas, may also form part of the rituals.
We understand that these moments can be deeply personal and important. Our team will do everything possible to support your family with sensitivity, dignity and respect.
Temple and Crematorium Arrangements
Where requested, we can help arrange the funeral so that the service attends the temple first before moving on to the crematorium. We will work with your family and, where needed, the temple, to help make sure timings and transport arrangements are organised carefully.
Our team will talk everything through with you in advance so that the day feels as calm, respectful and well organised as possible.
Care and Family Support
We will bring your loved one into our care with dignity and respect, and we will guide your family through each stage of the arrangements clearly and compassionately.
We understand that Hindu funerals can involve important family customs and religious observances, and we will do all we can to support those wishes wherever possible.
The Cremation Service
In the UK, the deceased will usually be taken to the crematorium in a coffin, with the service arranged according to the family’s wishes and the requirements of the crematorium. Families may wish for prayers, hymns, readings or other religious elements to be included during the service.
In India, many Hindu families traditionally hope for cremation to take place near sacred water, particularly along the River Ganga. In the UK, while the setting is different, families can still honour their customs through prayer, family participation and meaningful ritual.
Our team can help coordinate the journey from the family home, funeral home or temple to the crematorium, ensuring that timings, transport and the order of the day are carefully planned.
After the Funeral and Ashes
Holding Ashes in Our Care
After the cremation has taken place, we can hold the ashes safely in our care until your family is ready to collect them or make arrangements for them to be scattered.
Time to Make the Right Decision
We understand that families may need time before deciding when and where they would like to scatter the ashes. We are happy to give you that time and support you when you are ready.
Scattering Ashes
Many Hindu families choose to scatter ashes on water. Some families may take the ashes to India, while others may choose the sea or another meaningful place closer to home.
Practical Guidance
If you are unsure what to do after the funeral, our team will be happy to talk you through the available options in a clear and supportive way.
Mourning and Remembrance
After the funeral, Hindu families may observe a period of mourning. Customs vary, but close family members may spend time together in prayer, reflection and remembrance. In some traditions, white may be worn as a sign of mourning.
Some families observe a period of mourning for around twelve days, with a further ritual taking place on the thirteenth day. This may be known as Kriya, and can include prayers or offerings made in memory of the person who has died.
Many families also continue to remember their loved one in the years that follow. Some may observe Shraddha, a remembrance ceremony where offerings may be made in honour of departed ancestors.
